Practical Mysticism by Evelyn Underhill. Through the kindness of several people, we now have a copy of a wonderful book on Mysticism that is quite a bit less challenging and in many ways more rewarding than Underhill's classic Mysticism which appears below. Download

Christian Counsel & Spiritual Letters
by Fenelon
The first eBook published and designed through ChristianMystics Books. François de Salignac de la Mothe-Fénelon, more commonly known as François Fénelon (August 6, 1651–January 7, 1715), was a French Roman Catholic theologian, poet and writer. He today is remembered primarily as one of the primary advocates of quietism and as the author of The Adventures of Telemachus, a scabrous attack on the French monarchy, first published in 1699.
This publication features both books, Christian Counsel and Spiritual Letters.

The Cloud of Unknowing Annotated: The Art of Contemplative Prayer
by J. E. Mariconda
Description: The original "Cloud of Unknowing" represents the first expression in English that is best in Christian spiritual wisdom. My book, the "Cloud of Unknowing Annottated", provides a review of each chapter (and sections of chapters) of the original "Cloud of Unknowing" along with matching excerpts from the Bible (both old and new testaments). These Bibical excerpts inspire the call to daily prayer, and they reveal the hidden contemplative message. The cited excerpts show that the contemplative message is intentionally woven throughout the Bible.

Self-Abandonment To Divine Providence.
by Jean-Pierre de Caussade
Probably the greatest classic on surrendering our wills to Divine Providence (God's will). Filled with beautiful, penetrating insights, an incredibly rich store wisdom. Shows how sanctity is to be attained amidst our common daily activities when performed to perfection and for the love of God. Written to help those who despair of ever becoming holy. A great and famous classic!

Dark Night of the Soul
by St. John of the Cross
It is perhaps not an exaggeration to say that the verse and prose works combined of St. John of the Cross form at once the most grandiose and the most melodious spiritual canticle to which any one man has ever given utterance.

The most sublime of all the Spanish mystics, he soars aloft on the wings of Divine love to heights known to hardly any of them. . . . True to the character of his thought, his style is always forceful and energetic, even to a fault.

Mysticism: A Study in Nature and
Development of Spiritual Consciousness.

by Evelyn Underhill
First published in 1911, Mysticism remains the classic in its field and was lauded by The Princeton Theological Review as 'brilliantly written [and] illuminated with numerous well-chosen extracts . . . used with exquisite skill.' Mysticism makes an in-depth and comprehensive exploration of its subject. Part One examines The Mystic Fact, explaining the relation of mysticism to vitalism, to psychology, to theology, to symbolism, and to magic. Part Two, The Mystic Way, explores the awakening, purification, and illumination of the self; discusses voices and visions; and delves into manifestations from ecstasy and rapture to the dark night of the soul.

Christian Mysticism
by William Ralph Inge.
Anglican prelate and author. He was dean of St. Paul's Cathedral from 1911 to 1934. Well known for his originality of thought and for his pessimism, the latter earned him the title “the gloomy dean.” His works include several on mysticism, a subject in which he was much interested. If you spend a bit of time with his Christian Mysticism (1897), you should see why it's considered a "lost classic."

Jesus: The Son of Man
by Gibran
A remarkable book looking at Jesus from the point of view of contemporaries, some favorable and inspired, some not-so-favorable and very telling of the person speaking. Spiritually insightul and dramatic in its poetic mystery, the format doesn't do the book justice, but it is well worth having and reading. Also available online at CM.com

Orthodoxy: The Romance of Faith
by G. K. Chesterton
If G.K. Chesterton's Orthodoxy: The Romance of Faith is, as he called it, a "slovenly autobiography," then we need more slobs in the world. This quirky, slender book describes how Chesterton came to view orthodox Catholic Christianity as the way to satisfy his personal emotional needs, in a way that would also allow him to live happily in society. Chesterton argues that people in western society need a life of "practical romance, the combination of something that is strange with something that is secure. We need so to view the world as to combine an idea of wonder and an idea of welcome."

Usually only available in very expensive reprints -- when it can be found -- Fairweather attempts to trace the history of Mystics in the Christian tradition. Well worth a study.

The Essentials of Mysticism
Evelyn Underhill
One of the classics on mysticism, a bit easier to digest than her opus work, Mysticism. Still, the reproduction is not as high a quality as the book itself, but wonderful for your personal spiritual library.
